A 3MF is a ZIP archive of XML, so nothing needs installing to look inside. Open it in a browser viewer, a slicer, or CAD - and fix it when it won't open.
A 3MF file is a ZIP archive full of XML, so a browser-based 3MF viewer opens it with no install, no account and no slicer download. Open it in a slicer instead only when you intend to print or edit.
That is the whole trick to how to open a 3MF file: pick the door that matches what you want to do with it.
A .3mf is not a render format. It is a manufacturing package.
The 3MF Core Specification defines it as XML model data wrapped in a ZIP container, using the same Open Packaging Conventions as .docx and .xlsx. Unzip any 3MF and you find three parts that matter:
[Content_Types].xml - declares what each part is_rels/.rels - points to the root model3D/3dmodel.model - mesh, units and build items, in UTF-8 XMLEverything else is optional payload: extra objects, color, textures, thumbnails, even the slicer settings of the person who saved it.
Don't take the ZIP claim on faith. Rename part.3mf to part.zip and unzip it. Prusa's knowledge base tells you to do exactly that, and it is the fastest way to see what a file really contains.
Sizes prove the point. A single-object 3MF is often a few hundred KB where the STL of the same mesh runs into megabytes. The 3MF Consortium's FAQ puts it plainly: as a zipped XML package, 3MF is "often significantly" smaller than comparable 3D formats, because it stores topology and object references instead of a loose triangle soup.
.3mf onto the window. A click works too if you prefer a file picker. The viewer reads 3MF, STL, OBJ, GLB and PLY. More than enough as a 3D print viewer for a two-minute sanity check before you commit to filament.
Why a 3mf file viewer instead of a slicer? Because a slicer is a few hundred megabytes of download, an installer, and often an account. For "what is this file", that is overkill.
One catch worth knowing. On a fresh Windows 11 machine, double-clicking a .3mf can do nothing at all. Microsoft removed the 3D Viewer app from the Microsoft Store on July 1, 2026, after retiring Paint 3D in 2024 - Microsoft's deprecation list confirms it. If the app was already on the machine it keeps working. Otherwise there is no default handler.
All four main slicers open 3MF files: Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Cura, OrcaSlicer.
The chain:
.3mf onto the build plate.Step 3 is where people get burned. In PrusaSlicer, opening a 3MF project loads the printer, filament and print settings stored inside it, and can overwrite the ones you spent an hour tuning. Use File → Import → Import STL/3MF if you want the model only. Prusa's 3MF article documents both paths and the difference.
Bambu Studio is the other trap. Since version 1.8.3 it saves 3MF using the 3MF Production Extension, which splits model data across several files inside the archive. Older Cura and PrusaSlicer builds read that as an empty plate. PrusaSlicer merged support on March 21, 2024, per Bambu's compatibility note.
Rule of thumb: open a Bambu or Orca project in Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer. Everything else opens anywhere.
A slicer shows you a print. CAD lets you edit one.
Set expectations first. 3MF carries triangles. The Consortium states it does not and will not support NURBS, so Fusion will not turn your import into a solid without mesh-to-BRep conversion. Fine for scaling, splitting and booleans on simple parts. Painful on a 2 mm wall you want to move.
Six usual suspects, roughly in order of frequency.
[Content_Types].xml instead of a preview. Nothing is broken - you unzipped it..3mf, or a ZIP of a model someone mislabelled. Load it in the viewer and read the error. If you searched "3mf datei öffnen", the answer is identical in German: browser viewer, slicer, or rename to .zip and look inside. Same file, same three doors.
The usual outcome of emailing a .3mf is "what do I do with this?"
Send a link instead.
.3mf in a folder with a one-page index.html: part name, material, print time, layer height, download link.Test before you send.
What they get: a real page they are not afraid to click. What you skip: accounts, FTP, commission on anything you sell, and any model training on your files.
Everything you need, nothing more.
Yes. Drop it into the browser viewer at /tools/3d-viewer and it renders in the tab. Renaming it to .zip also works if you only need the metadata or the thumbnail.
Functionally, yes - a ZIP with a required internal structure. unzip -l model.3mf lists the parts. If that command fails, the file is not a 3MF, whatever the extension says.
No. A 3MF file viewer renders the triangles read-only. Nothing is sliced, resaved or sent to a printer. Slicing needs a slicer, and printing needs a slicer plus a machine profile.
Production Extension. The geometry is stored in separate parts the older reader cannot resolve. Open the file in Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer, export as STL, then feed that STL to Cura.
