Upfling vs static.app, compared for people who want a static.app alternative

A plain comparison of Upfling and Static.app: free plan vs trial, real prices, file limits, forms, backups, AI training and migration steps - including where Static.app is the better buy.

You want a static.app alternative because your folder of HTML is ready and you need a URL, not a signup flow. Upfling and static.app both turn a folder into a live HTTPS site. They differ on the free plan, the limits and the feature list, and on what happens to your files after upload.

The quick answer

Pick Upfling

For free static site hosting with no countdown, a $40-a-year plan for client previews, and a written promise that your files don't train AI models. It's built for non-developers and for people publishing what an AI builder made.

Pick static.app

If you need built-in forms, daily backups, short links with click counts, videos up to 1 GB from their Medium plan up, or workspaces for a team, or a product Designmodo has been running since 2019.

Both are static site hosting. Neither runs server-side code, a database or a build step.

static.app figures checked on 20 October 2026, on their pricing page and homepage.

How we compared. Upfling is our product. static.app's figures were read off their public pricing page and homepage on the date above. Every price on this page is in US dollars, because that is the only currency static.app publishes. Where static.app publishes nothing on a feature, we say so instead of guessing.

Where Upfling wins

  • A free plan, not a trial. Free costs nothing for as long as you want it: 2 sites, 25 MB, a live HTTPS subdomain, API and MCP access, and no card. static.app's free option is a 7-day trial with 50 MB. When the trial ends, you pay or the site goes offline.
  • A lower entry price. Lite is $40 a year billed yearly ($3.33/mo), or $3.99 month to month. static.app's cheapest paid plan is Starter at $5/mo billed yearly, $60 a year.
  • No AI training on your files. We don't use them to train models, sell them or publish them anywhere but your site. The only thing that reads them is the safety scan, which looks for phishing and malware.
  • No commission. Sell a template, a PDF guide or workshop tickets from your site. Upfling takes nothing from the sale.
  • MCP on every plan, Free included. Connect Upfling's MCP server in Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf or VS Code, then publish without leaving the chat.
  • A folder becomes a URL in about 20 seconds. Drop the folder, sign in to keep it, and copy the link. There's no Git, no pipeline and no dashboard to learn first.
  • Cancelling doesn't delete your sites. Cancel and your sites keep serving to the end of the period you paid for. Sites over the Free limits then get 30 days' grace before they're suspended, not deleted.

Where static.app wins

static.app does several things Upfling doesn't, and one of them is on a lot of client briefs.

  • Built-in forms. Add a static-form attribute to an HTML form and every submission lands in your static.app dashboard, on any paid plan. Upfling has no form handling at all, and our own terms say so. Pro adds email capture, which is not a contact form.
  • Backups. A backup slot takes a daily snapshot of one site and keeps the 365 most recent versions. Large includes 3 slots, and extra slots start at $5/mo. Upfling has no backup feature, so keeping copies is up to you.
  • Short links. stc.ac links with click counts and expiry dates, on every paid plan. Upfling gives you a site URL and a QR code, not a link shortener.
  • 1 GB per file. Upfling caps a single video at 25 MB on Free and 100 MB on Lite. Other files have no per-file cap beyond your storage, but if you ship long 4K clips, this decides it.
  • 30 sites for $15/mo. That's static.app's Large plan, billed yearly. Upfling needs Business at $15.83/mo billed yearly, with unlimited sites, to go past 25.
  • A bigger product. Workspaces, team seats, integrations, desktop apps and a library of free web tools.
  • A track record. static.app is a Designmodo product, with a copyright line running from 2019 to 2026.

If your checklist says forms, backups and short links, stop comparing and buy Starter with a $5/mo backup slot.

What each plan actually costs

Upfling and static.app plans in US dollars
PlanMonth to monthBilled yearlyIncludes
Upfling Free$0$02 sites, 25 MB
Upfling Lite$3.99/mo$3.33/mo ($40 a year)5 sites, 4 GB, custom domain
Upfling Pro$6.99/mo$5.83/mo ($70 a year)25 sites, 10 GB, email capture
Upfling Business$18.99/mo$15.83/mo ($190 a year)Unlimited sites, 200 GB
static.app trial$0 for 7 daysNot offered50 MB on the trial
static.app Starter$6/mo$5/mo ($60 a year)2 sites, 500 MB, forms, short links
static.app Medium$12/mo$10/mo ($120 a year)7 sites, 3 GB, 1 team seat
static.app Large$18/mo$15/mo ($180 a year)30 sites, 10 GB, 3 team seats, 3 backup slots

static.app's plan cards lead with the yearly-billed rate, so the number on the card is less than month-to-month billing costs.

A worked example: three small sites for a year

  • Upfling: three sites don't fit Free, and Lite covers 5. That's $40 for the year.
  • static.app: Starter stops at 2 sites. Either Medium at $120 a year, or Starter plus one extra site at $4/mo, which comes to $108 a year.
  • Want a backup slot on static.app too? Add $60 a year.

Same job, same twelve months: $40 against $120 or $108. That gap is the whole argument for a one-person shop sending previews.

Does your folder train an AI model?

This is the one place where the comparison stops being about features.

A folder from ChatGPT or Claude can carry a client brief, a pricing sheet, unreleased copy, or a .env file someone pasted by accident. Terms that give a host broad rights over uploaded files outlive the project.

Upfling's position is written down: your files serve your site, and we don't use them to train models or sell them.

We found nothing on static.app's pricing page or terms that says it trains on your files, and nothing that rules it out. Their terms and privacy policy govern, so check for yourself:

  1. 1Open static.app's terms and search for "train", "machine learning", "derived data" and "license".
  2. 2Email their support and ask whether uploaded content is used for model training. Get the answer in writing.
  3. 3Do the same check for any host before you upload client work with an NDA attached.

Two minutes of reading beats a clause you find after a client asks.

How to move a site from static.app to Upfling

  1. 1Log in to static.app, open the site and download your files. If you have a backup slot, restore the version you want first. Otherwise use the folder you uploaded.
  2. 2Unzip it and open the home page in your browser. If it renders, the folder is complete.
  3. 3Open Upfling and drag the whole folder onto the page, or the ZIP if you'd rather. No Git, no build command.
  4. 4Sign in to keep it. Free, no card.
  5. 5Copy the HTTPS link, then click through every page and check the images load.
  6. 6Add your custom domain on a paid plan, update the DNS records at your registrar, and keep both sites live until the new domain resolves. Then cancel static.app.

Which one should you pick?

  • Freelancer sending previews. Upfling. Lite is $40 a year, password protection keeps the link private, and sites within the Free limits stay live if you cancel. You don't pay for workspaces you never open. More in hosting for freelancers.
  • AI-builder user with a folder from ChatGPT or Claude. Upfling. Host the ChatGPT folder with one drop, or publish from Claude over MCP without leaving the chat. The free plan covers your first 2 sites, and the files you generated are never used for training. Switch to static.app if the page needs a working contact form, or a single video over 250 MB, which only Upfling's Business plan accepts.
  • Developer who needs forms and backups. static.app. Built-in form handling, daily snapshots, 1 GB per file and an MCP connector. Large is the plan that includes backup slots and 10 GB of storage, at $15 a month billed yearly. Working around missing features costs more than that.
